Portable Wireless Incident Response GIS Application Demonstrated
Posted in Incident Mangement, Service News
HOUSTON, TX – March 4, 2002 – R7 Solutions, Inc., a Houston-based information technology consulting firm, unveiled its latest mobile, wireless GIS incident response applications today at the 2002 ESRI Petroleum User Group conference in Houston, Texas. To demonstrate portability and ease-of-use, the application were deployed from a portable server and wireless router temporarily mounted in a 4×4 sport utility vehicle driven into the conference center and demonstrated live.
Dubbed the “Mobile Wireless Application Center” (MWAC), the vehicle demonstrated technologies that could serve as the command and control hub for emergency spill response teams using the R7 Solutions’ client-server wireless spill response system, including both handheld and tablet computer interfaces. The vehicle provided a wireless network in the field to support response activities, as well connections for satellite uplink to corporate data warehouses and GIS systems with local data caching on in-vehicle servers.
For the demonstration, the vehicle was outfitted with a high-gain wireless LAN antennae, amplified wireless access points, multiple in-vehicle servers running R7 Solutions’ proprietary spill response application for handhelds, a command workstation, an ethernet switch for connecting laptops and other devices directly into the vehicle’s network, and halogen field lighting. All server hard drives are removable and RAID-enabled for easy management. Also demonstrated were a GPRS/FRS base-station for voice communications and a Trimble sub-meter GPS receiver for pin-pointing spill events to a precision beyond that available with the handheld GPS.
