R7 Solutions Engaged by Port of Houston Authority to Audit GIS Software Development Project for New Bayport Terminal
Posted in Client News, Public Sector
HOUSTON, TX, November 2003 – The Port of Houston Authority has engaged R7 Solutions to audit, review and provide strategic consulting and recommendations for development of a large-scale geographic information system (GIS) for its new Bayport Container Terminal Complex. R7 Solutions is a Houston-based GIS and enterprise information technology consulting firm.
The Bayport GIS systems will be the first GIS to be deployed by the Port of Houston Authority. As a part of the engagement, R7 Solutions will also evaluate a similar, larger project in the future for the entire Port of Houston system.
The Bayport GIS system will enable users to manage complex data through a centralized client/server system based on industry-standard mapping software. The system is intended to increase data accessibility throughout the project and present critical information with visual clarity.
As an intricate facility still undergoing construction, Bayport requires a GIS system that can highlight engineering concerns, provide land management features, and map a complicated topography. This topography includes public and private facilities, warehouses, office spaces, storage yards, pipelines, utilities and bridges.
As a part of this project, R7 Solutions will perform an audit and thorough feasibility study to evaluate the costs and benefits of a similar project in the entire Port of Houston.
About the Bayport Facility
The BayPort Terminal provides more than $1 billion in business to the Port of Houston and Houston Metropolitan Area, and expects to generate 15,000 jobs over its first 10 years in operation and 32,000 jobs at fully built capacity. Bayport is expected to become a 50-foot deep channel, providing one of the deepest shipping ports on the Gulf Coast.
