R7 Solutions Executive Interviewed in PDA Planet Magazine

HOUSTON, TX, August 1, 2002 – An R7 Solutions executive was interviewed for an article on the emergence of handheld geographic information systems (GIS) in this month’s PDA Planet magazine.
The article, “Mapping your way on a PDA with Geographic Information Systems” by Lee Bauman, appeared in the July 31st, 2002 edition of PDA Planet.

Bauman believes that the rapidly growing popularity of handheld computing devices and the continued growth of GIS in the enterprise will soon make handheld GIS an important technology:

Mobile GIS has allowed for a broad range of applications to emerge across many industries. Oil and gas companies are loading up PDAs with databases and aerial images, and taking them into the field to perform pipeline inspections.

Many organizations are using GPS on PDAs to perform not just field inspections, but field inventories. Energy providers have long been using standalone GPS units to inventory and record locations of power poles and utility lines — this information is then entered and stored in a GIS. The advantage to combining GPS with a PDA is that it allows field staff to be more mobile, and consequently more productive.
