R7 Solutions Public Policy Mapping Application Featured on ABCNews.com

HOUSTON, TX, October 15, 2005 – ABCNews.com, the online outlet for the award-winning ABC News network, featured R7 Solutions’ nuclear blast map mapping application on its front page today, increasing traffic to the site by thousands of users an hour and highlighting the important public policy capabilities of interactive mapping.
R7 Solutions developed the application in November, 2004 in support of Dr. Graham Allison’s new book, Nuclear Terrorism: The Ultimate Preventable Catastrophe. One of the foremost experts on the subject of nuclear terrorism, Dr. Allison is a founding dean of Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, a former top Pentagon official, and one of America’s leading scholars of nuclear strategy and national security.
The application is part of the book’s web site at www.NuclearTerror.org, allowing users to see, at a glance, the area effects of a ten kiloton nuclear blast. When users enter a zip code into the website, a color-coded blast map is super-imposed over a street map of the area with an explanation of effects.
“We are delighted that major news media are highlighting this application,” said K. Lawrence Epperson, CEO of R7 Solutions. “We believe the policy implications are important and are happy to have made this contribution to the discussion of where we should be spending our money and effort in preventing catastrophic events. Interactive mapping allows the public to make the news personal and to explore for themselves the implications of stories that they hear about in the media.”
ABCNews.com is one of the top ten online news outlets in the world and receives approximately 1.9 million unique user visits per month.
R7 Solutions, a Houston-based GIS and enterprise software consulting firm, hosts and maintains the web site and application for Dr. Allison and the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the John F. Kennedy School of Government.
